 | | If one wants to play music that has deep bass notes, one usually tunes the bass strings down. The same effect can be achieved, permanently, by simply lengthening the bass strings; this allows lower-pitched notes that sound full, and not muddy. It’s the same principle that operates in harp guitars.
This guitar, which was commissioned by artist Keola Beamer for such a musical use, is designed the way a lot of Baroque lutes were: these actually had a second head that extended past the primary one, so that the instrument could have longer bass strings.
