Koran Frontispiece

8" x 8"

Detail from a Koran frontispiece, Egypt, 1536. Carved into bookmatched Sitka spruce. There are approximately 1,350 cut lines, each line requiring several cutting strokes. To the Islamic mind such a design speaks to the unspeakable perfection of God in every thing: it is a deeply spiritual statement that is made from the real world.
